2005 Schedule

Below are the Byte events for 2005. Races counting towards the season championship are highlighted with yellow. The other listings are non-official regattas (i.e. not counting towards the season championship) and just fun sailing events. Start thinking about what you'd like to do in 2006!

March 12-13 (Sat-Sun) St. Francis Spring Dinghy Regatta -- This is a good regatta on the city front. However, it conflicts with the RYC Big Daddy, which many of our RYC members attend (on big boats, not Bytes) and so has never been a fleet choice. However, this could be an official regatta if enough Bytes want to attend. St. Francis usually requires a 5 boat minimum commitment in advance.
Starting mid-March (exact dates be determined)

March 5, 11:30-2:30 = "tryouts"

Byte class at Jack London Aquatic Center (through City of Oakland).  90 hours of instructor time, boat provides, with Dan Ouellet for $210.00. Dan think he will hold tryout at JLAC on March 5th, from 11:30 – 2:30. Dan says "They must show me that they can sail. Take a Byte out and sail up wind, down wind, jibe, and dock (without crashing into the dock). You won't be accepted if I think they can’t handle Mother Nature or aren’t up to the challenge. Safety first, then Byte safety second.  Adults are welcome, but adults get bumped if the class fills up  -- and adults also get bumped at field trip time if the trailer is full. But if you want to get into Byte racing  or just want to get better and want to “cruise” around the estuary with some coaching, contact Dan at douellet@ebmud.com or 510-910-5679.
April 2-3 (Sat-Sun)    "Big Dinghy" regatta at RYC -- Day 1 is racing around the buoys, usually in Keller Cove. Day 2 is a reverse-start race around Brooks Island. Both days are counters.
April 16-17 (Sat-Sun)  RYC Women's Dinghy Clinic -- Cancelled due to low enrollment and construction in the RYC harbor.
April 24 (Sun) RYC Sail-a-Byte Day -- Our fleet throws this event, which gives interested individuals a chance to try out a boat. Usually quite a few Women's Dinghy Clinic attendees show up. Fleet members are encouraged to attend and to lend their boat for this event. This is, coincidentally, Opening Day on the Bay, and a fun time to be out on the water.
May 1 RYC first-Sunday-of-the-month Series -- An informal series, typically sailed in Keller Cove. Participants pay $5-10 to cover cost of support boats. If our fleet participates  in this series, we incur the responsibility of serving as race committee for one or more days.
May 14-15 (Sat-Sun) Lake Yosemite YC regatta - Four Bytes currently are planning on going . For more information, contact Gail. NOR, Entry fee, Entry form, Directions.
This Regatta will be held May 14th. & 15th. Lake Yosemite is located just outside of Merced CA, a two hour drive from most Bay Area locations. Normal mid-May weather features clear skies and low to mid-80 degree temps. Normal winds blow between 12 & 18 Knots. There will be three races on Saturday and two on Sunday. Saturday night features an all you can eat pasta feed and live band. The club offers free camping (tent or RV) and a shower (1) in the clubhouse.
May 22 RYC first-Sunday-of-the-month Series -- An informal series, typically sailed in Keller Cove. Participants pay $5-10 to cover cost of support boats. If our fleet participates  in this series, we incur the responsibility of serving as race committee for one or more days. Note: This particular event is NOT the first Sunday, but is being held to make the most of milder, pre-summer winds.
June 5 RYC first-Sunday-of-the-month Series -- An informal series, typically sailed in Keller Cove. Participants pay $5-10 to cover cost of support boats. If our fleet participates  in this series, we incur the responsibility of serving as race committee for one or more days. The fleet is going to Gold Country this weekend.
June 4-5 (Sat-Sun)  Gold Country Regatta -- on Scotts Flat Lake, near Grass Valley, CA. Lake sailing (shifty) in a beautiful location. A camping weekend. There's a BBQ Saturday night and breakfast Sunday. Hard to predict the weather. It's usually beautiful with moderate winds, but we've seen quite a variety of situations. We usually rent 1-2 camp sites as a fleet.
June 11 (Sat) Lake Washington Regatta -- Races run by the LWSC at the Port of Sacramento
June 22-26 (Thurs. through
Sun)
Byte clinic at Clear Lake -- The Byte fleet returns to Clear Lake for a 4-day Byte clinic for all sailing abilities. Oh, the fun of sailing in warm, flat water and good breezes!!  Note: Sailors under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Del Olsen will be our instructor (and maybe another instructor as well), 2 support boats. We have leased 3 cabins with kitchens from Wednesday night through Sunday at the Fun Time RV Park. Anticipated cost is $35 per day per person for housing (including non-sailors) with a 2 day minimum. We will also share cooking (and related food costs).
June 25-26 (Sat-Sun)   Treasure Island Fun Regatta -- Bay Area Youth Sailing (BAYS)
July 9-10 (Sat-Sun) High Sierra Regatta at Huntington Lake -- near Fresno. This is a big regatta -- first come, first served -- and requires a commitment of at least 5 boats well in advance. Camping and condos. The fleet attended this event in 2003 and had fun. Long races, plenty of wind, but it feels different at high altitude.
July 10 (Sun) RYC first-Sunday-of-the-month Series -- We, along with the IC fleet, are responsible for running this event. The fleet is going to Huntington this week, so hopefully a few people who are not going to Huntington can provide this support (or we must negotiate another date or drop from the series -- both are possibilities).
July 16-17 (Sat-Sun)   St. Francis YC -- Bay Area Youth Sailing (BAYS)
July 23-24 (Sat-Sun)   Encinal YC -- Bay Area Youth Sailing (BAYS)
August 7 (Sun) RYC first-Sunday-of-the-month Series -- An informal series, typically sailed in Keller Cove. Participants pay $5-10 to cover cost of support boats. If our fleet participates  in this series, we incur the responsibility of serving as race committee for one or more days.
August 7 (Sun) Folsom Single-Handed Regatta
August 28 (Sun) Encinal YC Small Boat Series -- Fairly informal races in the estuary -- smooth water, moderate but shifty winds. This is a fun venue for Bytes.

Encinal holds this series the last Sunday of the month. Other dates (not counting towards championship) are:April 24, May 29, June 26, July 31, and September 29

September 11 (Sun) RYC first-Sunday-of-the-month Series -- An informal series, typically sailed in Keller Cove. Participants pay $5-10 to cover cost of support boats. If our fleet participates  in this series, we incur the responsibility of serving as race committee for one or more days.
Sept 10-11 (Sat-Sun) Santa Cruz Fun Regatta?
Sept 17-18 (Sat-Sun) Folsom Fall Regatta??
Sept. 24-25 (Sat-Sun)   Totally Dinghy Regatta at RYC -- Two days of round-the-buoy racing, usually in Keller Cove. This is a favorite.
Oct 29-30 (Sat-Sun) St. Francis YC Fall Dinghy -- Great city-front racing. We need a minimum of 5 boats to register. (Unfortunately, RYC's Great Pumpkin Regatta for big boats is the same weekend).
Nov. 13 (Sun) Lake Washington Turkey Shoot -- Port of Sacramento.
